Heads down, hands clasped, lights dimmed: The Grammys opened in the only way it could. The news of once-reigning superstar Whitney Houston's death had hit only 24 hours earlier, and what else was to be done? After Bruce Springsteen's competent rendition of "We Take Care of Our Own," host LL Cool J acknowledged the burden he and all the room now shouldered—"There is no way around this: We had a death in our family"—and addressed it in the manner that deaths everywhere are. There's so much more to make fun of at the Grammys, and really, that's the most important contribution any awards show can make to society.

Behind the scenes, it's been somewhat of a standoff between the CMAs and the Grammys, with each telecast vying for bragging rights to have Campbell perform. The implementation of Plan B came in the mid-1990s, but didn't get much attention. Nicki Minaj wore more of a costume than a gown to the Grammys. So here’s the scoop. It’s closing in on 4 pm in LA and, as promised to my teeming millions, I’m here, at the Grammys. As proven again Sunday, the Grammys aren’t really about shining a spotlight on artists who are making great art outside the industry marketing machine.

On ArjanWrites. A country music groups won 5 grammys, WOW!!. Nor is it to say that albums that sell a lot of copies are inherently lacking in artistic achievement. Yet the best performances on the Grammys barely had any gimmicks at all: Maxwell in a dark suit belting out a soul ballad or Jeff Beck working his guitar like the Les Paul disciple he is. The Grammys , like the weather, are beyond our control. There's little incentive.

OK, so the Grammys are about music and celebrating all the wonderful artists the industry has to offer. At the CMAs, Campbell beamed from the audience while Keith Urban, Brad Paisley and Vince Gill serenaded him with his biggest hits, but the Grammys will be a different story.
