The Italian mathematician who helped prepare the development of Google's search algorithm on its own challenge to the dominant search engine start before the end of the year.

Massimo Marchiori to speak, associate professor at the University of Padua, began recently, the new search engine, written in the promotional video on a website at volunia.com: Massimo Marchiori (W3C source).

In a video that shows him sitting on a park bench and writing on a blackboard, he says: "It's not just Google, plus 10 percent is a different perspective, there is a radical new vision of what could be a search engine of the future. .. "

The website allows visitors to sign up for a chance to "power users" who are the beta version of the search engine, to be launched in twelve languages ??to test.

In an interview in the online edition of the Corriere della Sera published last week, Marchiori declined to go into detail about what would Volunia apart from its established competitors set to go.

"For the moment I can not say more, I'm really sorry ... The fact is that a company like Google to give an example, would be no difficulty in setting up 100 engineers to day and night on our idea to work and before us in the next, "said Marchiori.

"If I do not think it was something big, able to compete with the giants of online search, I would never have got involved," he said.

Marchiori said the basic idea was simple and radically different than the current approach by the major search engines. "If Google used a club, we are working with a fencer's foil. The difference of our search engine is what will help us develop. And because Volunia is really useful for people."

Marchiori is a member of the board of Tim Berners-Lee, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and is on the Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P) and the Web Ontology Language (OWL) is used. His Hyper-Search algorithm was presented at a conference in California in 1996, carried a 23-year-old Larry Page attended. The algorithm developed later on in Google's page rank system.

The new project is based in Padua, in northeastern Italy. Many software developers are Marchiori former students at the university, and the financing is supplied by Mariano Pireddu, a Sardinian businessman with 20 years experience in the IT and telecommunications.

"The partners are me and Aaron, and all the researchers who worked on the project," Pireddu said in a telephone interview. "None of us are dreaming of creating a better search engine than Google. We think we can have a motor that is out of Google to create."

Pireddu is the owner of Malloru, a consulting firm in the western Sardinian town of Oristano and was formerly the President of the Slovenian telecommunications company and an investor in Voljatel Mindware Studios, a software company based in Prague.

Volunia based servers in Sardinia and is provided by Tiscali, Tiscali founder Renato Soru but not an investor, said Pireddu.

"We have sufficient funds to finance the early stages of the venture. It is premature to talk about the possible entry of new investors," he said.

"The market is telling us in a democratic way, if our idea was good. If users like it, we have does a good job. If not, we will correct the product," said Pireddu.

In his interview with Corriere della Sera, said Marchiori Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, had always recognized his contribution to Google's formula and he regretted that he did not participate in their amazing commercial adventure.

"The idea came a blood feud never on the idea," he said. "The truth is that there is such a nice idea, it would be a shame not be able to be realized it is. And now is the time to do it."
